Chichijima is the main inhabited island of the Bonin Islands, also known as Ogasawara. This archipelago of over 30 volcanic islands is located 1000 km south of Tokyo by 25 hour ferry and is home to approximately 2,400 residents. A unique cultural past and pristine natural environment serve as the the foundation for what has become one of the youngest and most vivacious populations in Japan. Established as Unesco World Natural Heritage site in 2011 for its evolutionary processes and large number of endemic species, Ogasawara is home to a thriving community living in harmony with waves.
